Drew's Review

We couldn’t have chosen a better burger joint for our second visit to Hamilton. Delirious Burger Co. is a no-frills local burger joint with friendly service, and more important, exceptionally tasty food.

Delirious can be described as “Hamilton's answer to The Burger’s Priest.” What sets Delirious apart from other local burger joints is that they offer American-style burger, cooked on a flat top grill rather than a griddle. Because the burger is cooked on a flat top, what you end up with is a crispy seared crust and a juicy interior.

Before Ben Greco opened Delirious in July of 2013, his wife said he must be “delirious" after telling her he was quitting 15-year-marketing career to open a burger joint in Hamilton.
"I made a big issue of finding something that was primarily unique," he said. "What I came across was a lot of the processed, fast food quality burgers. The burger was either frozen, had fillers, or the fries were also frozen, and it took away from the quality of the products produced." -Hamilton Spectator, July 2013
The small restaurant is tucked away on a side street in the west end of Hamilton. We were lucky we had Google Maps running so we were able to find it. The interior is bright and modern, with grey walls and black accents. Stools line the windows with a wooden counter-top. We arrived in the early evening and only a few diners were sitting when we entered.

The menu is small, which is refreshing because some places just offer many unnecessary options, and when all you want is the beef, this is the best option. They offer basic burgers and a stuffed Portobello burger veggie option, and the only side offered, at least when we were there, were fries. We placed our orders and within a few minutes, they were ready. It was fast.

I ordered the Double Bacon Cheeseburger topped with lettuce, red onions, ketchup and mayo. You can pay an extra 50 cents for sautéed onions, sautéed mushrooms or fried jalapenos. The meat was juicy and tender, and the flavour was succulent. The crispiness of the bacon clashed so elegantly with the tenderness of the beef. Every bite was satisfactory in my expectations. The double cheeseburger was just enough to satisfy my hunger and needless to say, I was full.

The fries on the side were outstanding. They were crispy on the outside, mushy in a delicious way on the inside and dusted in sea salt. They also provide you with malt vinegar, if you ask, which makes them even more amazing. Cannot say enough about these fries. Also, if anyone can find a way to fit the word 'fries' into this paragraph a few more times, please let me know.

Delirious Burger Company is a solid addition to the Hamilton burger scene. Their fries are excellent and their burgers among the best within the city limits. You’d be crazy not to try Delirious if you want a tasty burger that’s as quick as fast food (and comparable prices), but made with much higher quality ingredients. I will definitely pay this location a visit next time I find myself in the west end of Hamilton. *Thumbs up emoji*

After our first visit to Hamilton, which left a lasting impression to our stomachs... and wallets, we decided to come back and tag our second burger joint in the city. This time we take you to the neighbourhood of Westdale, in East Hamilton, where we visit Delirious.

Delirious has a simple, yet original menu. They don’t have much to offer from a simple beef burger to the whopping Double Bacon Cheeseburger. For those looking for a vegetarian alternative, the Stuffed Portobello Burger sounded quite appetizing as well.

I decided to try the Double Bacon Cheeseburger with my choice of toppings – lettuce, mustard, pickles, and tomato. I’m always a fan of burger joints that allow you to customize a burger to your liking. It makes the experience more personable and allows you to craft a meal that caters to your taste bud. They don’t offer any meal combos, so the sides and drink were added on as an extra charge.

The beef patty was probably the juiciest I have ever had. The crispiness of the bacon added a nice crunch, while all the other flavours meshed together to create a tangy sensation in my mouth.

Delirious was a traditional burger joint with appetizing burgers. I think this is what makes Delirious different from other joints that decide to go for a traditional route. They add flavour and care when crafting their burgers, which show in presentation and taste. Once again, Hamilton wowed me with an impressive burger experience. When this city has given its best, so far, I can’t wait to see what other burger joints are waiting to be tasted.

Mark's Review

This burger tour takes me to the east coast, where I visit one of Nova Scotia’s favourite burger joints. Marking the third solo tour and the 40th burger joint that we’ve tagged, I will be taking you to Darrell’s in downtown Halifax. This joint brought something different and unique to the plate, so don’t miss out on this promising review.

Darrell’s first opened in 1992 as ‘My Brother Darrell’. Since then, Darrell’s has won over their customers not just from the food, but from the service and hospitality. Their goal is to mould the customer experience, so that it’s personal and refined for each visit. I experienced this first hand as soon as I took my seat. The waitress that served me was from Newfoundland and knew I was from out of town. She asked where I was visiting from, and once I said “Toronto”, the conversation took off from there. I appreciated that she acknowledged who I was and where I was from, and that genuine effort over a short period made this visit even better.

Darrell’s has a wide selection from their menu ranging from burgers, pitas, wraps, sandwiches, salads, poutine, and desserts. As appetizing as they all sound, I had to focus on what I came here for... the burgers!

All of their burgers are made from fresh Certified Angus beef with your choice of Darrell Fries, regular fries, or a Darrell’s Nothing Fancy Salad.

The first thing that caught my eye was their famous Peanut Burger! So it wasn’t much hesitation that I immediately ordered this beast of a burger.

The Peanut Butter Burger is a spinoff of their BLTM burger (bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, relish, and ketchup), and topped with a thick layer of peanut butter. It looked like any other burger that I’ve had before, but as soon as I took that first bite, the peanut butter immediately made itself known as the main feature of the burger. The thick texture and nutty taste from the peanut butter created a well balanced flavour that added a touch of sweetness to the burger.

I wasn’t expecting the Peanut Butter burger to be so flavourful, but to my surprise everything tasted together perfectly. There was nothing I found out of the ordinary... if there was one thing... probably more peanut butter. Can’t have too much peanut butter!

Darrell’s left me a satisfying and memorable experience. From the service to the food this joint did not disappoint in its reputation, and I totally understand why this is a popular place among the locals. If I ever find myself back in Halifax, I will definitely be coming back for a second visit!
